A new light-hearted ITV drama starring some of TV’s biggest names is currently being filmed in the Crookes area of Sheffield.
Brief Encounters is a comedy that will focus on the rise of home selling in the early 1980s, and it will centre around four women searching for fulfilment and happiness in their lives. It stars Penelope Wilton (Downton Abbey), Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders), Angela Griffin (Coronation Street) and Sharon Rooney (My Mad Fat Diary; Sherlock) as the central characters.
The producers chose to set the programme in Sheffield because of the historical architecture that is reminiscent of the early eighties.
“Brief Encounters is a refreshingly different domestic drama taking us back to the wonderful world of the 1980s,” said Steve November, ITV’s Director of Drama. “We’re really excited by this commission – it’s full of heart, story and great new characters.”
The filming has also seen Sheffield’s Sharrow Vale Road transformed into a set for the programme, with existing shops made to look older to fit in with Brief Encounters‘ retro setting.
Filming on the show is set to continue in Sheffield over the next few weeks.
