Axe attack on police woman in Gleadless Valley


A police woman  is facing surgery following an axe attack in Gleadless Valley last night.

The police woman was one of five officers injured as they attempted to arrest a man involved in a domestic violence incident.

Police were called to Plowright Close around 7.50pm after reports from locals about a man being armed with an axe.

It is believed the man managed to grab a baton from one of the police officers and used it against them.

The man, who is in his thirties, was arrested inside the Co-op store nearby Blackstock Road in Newfield Green.

Five police officers were injured last night when they were attacked by a man wielding an axe in Sheffield last night.

Three other officers, all men, were also injured after the man fled to the nearby Co-Op store in Blackstock Road, where the man hurled objects at the officers.

The man is currently being held on suspicion of attempted murder.

Deputy Constable Dawn Copley said that last night’s events served as a reminder of the dangers officers face to protect communities daily.

“The officers who attended in Gleadless last night were faced with an extremely dangerous situation and showed immense bravery dealing with a violent individual. Our thoughts are with those who were injured on duty and full welfare support has been put in place for all officers affected,” she said.
