Investigation launched into alleged rape of 19-year-old woman

Detectives in Sheffield are investing an alleged rape in the early hours of this morning.

It is reported that around 4am, a 19-year-old woman left the University of Sheffield student union and got into a taxi towards the Broomhill area.

It is believed that during the journey, the taxi pulled over and the woman was raped.

Officers are now working with the victim to find the exact location of the incident.

Detective Constable Michelle Walton, the investigating officer, said: “I would like to reassure residents that this investigation is being treated as an absolute priority and we have a dedicated team of officers working on it.”

She continued: “We will be reviewing CCTV footage of the area and following a number of lines of enquiry in relation to this incident and a thorough investigation is now under way.

“The victim is currently receiving support from specially trained officers and I would ask that anyone who was in the area at the time of who saw  anything suspicious to please come forward and contact police.”
