The recently retired Talib Hussain was commemorated today for his services as Lord Mayor in the past year.
A council meeting was held at 11:30 AM today at Sheffield Town Hall’s council chamber where tributes flooded in for the ex Lord Mayor.
Mr Hussain, who is renowned for his activity within the local community before and during his reign as mayor, was showered with praise by numerous councillors at the meeting.
Councilor Peter Price, who represents Shiregreen and Brightside, was full of admiration for Mr Hussain.
“I am proud and honored to be here today for my good friend Talib Hussain.
From the poor village of Pharnal to becoming Lord Mayor, what an achievement.”
He said.“You’ve supported both of our universities by attending several events.
“You really have been a credit to our city and thanks for all you have done for our city. We are all very proud.”
Mr Hussain, who was withdrawing today, responded with a humble speech directed to fellow councillors.
“It was an immense privilege to serve the city of Sheffield. It has been an eventful year in so many ways. Thanks to all of the people who have worked behind the scenes.” He said.
“It has been a truly wonderful year. Finally let me thank all of the members of the council – Thank you Sheffield.”
Mr Hussain also publically endorsed Councillor Denise Fox at the meeting today where she was elected as the new Lord Mayor. Shortly after taking the decleration before the Chief Executive, she said
“I love being able to represent this area. I look forward to the year ahead. Thank you.”
