Sheffield Tigers boosted by arrival of Danish speedway star

Sheffield Tigers have announced Danish ace Lasse Bjerre as their first signing for the 2017 season.

The 23 year-old, who in 2010 became the youngest ever rider to win the Speedway Under-21 World with his native Denmark, rode for Redcar Bears last season and boasts an impressive average of 6.64.

Nicknamed the ‘pocket rocket’, Bjeree has gained British league experience with Kings Lynn, Ipswich, Peterborough, Leicester, Swindon and Wolverhampton, but also made guest appearances before for the Tigers, which he says gave him a good first impression of the club.

“I’ve done guest bookings before at Sheffield, it’s actually where I got my first 18 points maximum and I’ve always just liked the track and thought it suited me, so I think I can have a very good season with them.”

“The memories I have, there was no pressure, you just needed to go out and do the best you could do. They were all so good with me, the people around wouldn’t put too much pressure on me. If I had a bad heat they’d keep supporting me and tell me not to worry, and I like that.”

“The people around the club seemed really good and the mechanics impressed me and I like all of them, so I think it’s a professional and ambitious club and a cool team to come ride for next season.”

Bjerre has lofty ambitions and will be a busy rider next year, competing for Holstebro in the Danish League, and says he hopes to also feature in the SGB Premier League too.

“As a rider you always want to be at the top level, that’s what I think every rider aims for. I’m going to see if I can find something in the Premier League if that’s possible, and then take part in both leagues.

“I’m going to be quite busy with my Danish team too, and there are so many heats and events in Denmark it’s going to be a very busy year, but that’s how you want it- to keep going and keep improving.”

“It’s going to be a lot of travelling for me, but when you love it, you love it. You always want to ride as much as possible so I just have to crack on with it.”

Tigers officials have stated they hope Bjerre will be the first of several off-season signings as negotiations continue to bolster their side ahead of next year.

Fans of the Tigers have the chance to discuss team matters with club officials at the first of the winter STAARS meetings this Thursday, November 10, which takes place at the New Barrack Tavern on Penistone Road from 7.30pm.
