Storm Ophelia hits Sheffield

Gusts of up to 80mph will batter parts of the UK as Hurricane Ophelia sweeps in threatening to cause travel chaos.

The tropical storm has been making its way across the Atlantic and Ophelia’s remnants are set to reach home shores this morning, resulting in “exceptional” weather.

The Met Office has issued severe yellow weather alerts following a huge gust of wind at 1am this morning which was recorded at High Bradfield.

They have released a warning of potential power cuts, flying debris and disruption to transport and mobile phone signals.

There are a number of disruptions to the transport network this morning, mainly due to fallen trees.

Grand Central train services between Bradford Interchange and Doncaster will be diverted via Leeds due to a fallen tree.

Meanwhile, Underbank Lane in Stocksbridge is blocked in both directions due to a fallen tree.
