Two lorries and two other vehicles were involved in a collision on the M1 Southbound between junction 31 at Aston, Rotherham and 30 at Barlbourough, North Derbyshire earlier this morning.
Motorists involved in the pile-up have escaped without an serious injuries.
The Southbound lanes have been closed between both junctions and a diversion is in place, creating heavy congestion around the surrounding roads.
The mangled vehicles have now been towed away.
A police spokesperson said: “Please plan an alternative route and thank you for your patience while the incident is dealt with.”
