Sheffield Students’ Union Holds Hillsborough Vigil
Sheffield Students’ Union held the commemoration in the Activities Zone of the SU building, led by Women’s Officer Celeste Jones and SU President Kieran Maxwell.
It has been 29 years since the tragedy at Hillsborough, in which 96 people died and 766 were injured.
The disaster, which happened during FA Cup tie between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest on 15th April 1989, was misreported by the media after efforts by the police to hide their errors.
Despite the disaster happening in the city, the Union President believes not enough is done to remember it.
Kieran said, ‘I was disappointed when I came to Sheffield and found that nothing is done to remember them. That is why we are here today.’
‘Although the disaster happened 29-years-ago, it must be remembered so the same thing does not happen again and to prolong the memories of the people that tragically died there. They will be remembered.’
The speech is held annually at the Students’ Union.
