Sheffield United weren’t the only team in South Yorkshire celebrating this week, as Barnsley successfully secured their automatic promotion back to the Championship.
The Tykes earned promotion along with Luton Town on Tuesday after other results went their way with Portsmouth and Sunderland both losing their games.
Barnsley are currently level on 91 points with Luton, but are second-favourites to lift the League One title on Sunday as the Hatters have a four-goal difference advantage.
However, the South Yorkshire side could take the trophy with a heavy win at Bristol Rovers or if Luton lose, they could claim the title by simply bettering their result.
Daniel Standel’s Barnsley were among the favourites to secure promotion from the start of the season, following their relegation from the Championship 12 months ago.
Their victory at Fleetwood in April kicked off an impressive run of four successive wins, confidently seeing off Shrewsbury, Plymouth and Blackpool on their way to promotion.
Such has been the standard of their play this season, that five players – Adam Davies, Dmitiri Cavare, Ethan Pinnock, Alex Mowatt and Kieffer Moore – were named in the PFA League One Team of the Season.
The Tykes will now be hoping to consolidate their place in England’s second-tier as they did from 2006 to 2014, ending their series of yo-yo relegations and promotions in recent years.
The club previously spent two seasons in League One before going up via the 2016 play-offs, but came back down again two seasons later.
Barnsley will be hoping to hang onto manager Daniel Stendel and avoid a situation similar to what happened in 2018, when manager Paul Heckingbottom was lured away following promotion.
