Four Yorkshire-based footballers have been included in the England squad for the Women’s World Cup this summer.
Rachel Daly from Harrogate, Millie Bright from Chesterfield, Lucy Staniforth from York, and Whitby-born Beth Mead were all announced today in Phil Neville’s 23-woman squad.
All four players are set to make their World Cup debut, having never played in one before. The team have been drawn in group D alongside Scotland, Argentina, and Japan.
Daly, 27, was born in Harrogate and spent her youth career in Leeds until age 18, but now plays for Houston Dash in the American National Women’s Soccer League.
Bright, 25, currently for Chelsea after spending part of her youth days in Sheffield United’s side. The defender missed England’s SheBelieves Cup win in March through injury.
Staniforth, 26, plays as an attacking midfielder for Birmingham City and has been described as “one of the best young players in Europe” by former England coach Mark Sampson.
Mead, 23, is a forward playing at Arsenal, and was joint-top scorer in the SheBelieves Cup.
The Women’s World Cup will run from 7th June to 7th July in France, and all four Yorkshire women will be hoping to better the success of the men’s’ team, who were semi-finalists last year.
On choosing the squad for the tournament, England manager Neville said, “This is a significant moment in our World Cup campaign.
“Picking a squad is never easy but I believe in this group and I know they will be ready to help us perform at our very best at the finals.
“We know what we are capable of achieving and are determined to do all we can to be successful. We keep saying it, but the hard work starts now, and we are going to give it everything we have to make the nation proud.”
The team was announced this morning over social media, as England’s biggest celebrities announced the final squad. Prince William, David Beckham, and Emma Watson all shared twitter videos revealing the squad player-by-player.
Before they depart for the tournament on 4th June, the quartet will play against Denmark at Walsall’s Banks’s Stadium on 25th May and against New Zealand in Brighton’s American Express Stadium.
