Excitement as Festival of Outdoors set to return to Sheffield

Festival of the Outdoors returns to Sheffield for the second time to celebrate the city’s flourishing outdoor activities scene.

Adventurers from around the UK prepare for a jam-packed month of mountain biking, climbing, paddle-boarding and more this March.

The festival includes the Rab Climbing Works International Festival, which gives budding boulderers the opportunity to climb alongside some of the world’s best. It also hosts the hugely successful Magnificent 7 cycle race, which invites participants to take on the city’s seven toughest hill climbs.

Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure told Sheffield Newsroom: “2019 brought us a hugely exciting year of events and 2020 will not disappoint. The thing I am most proud of is the variety of events hosted across Sheffield.

“No matter what you are interested in, how old you are, how able you are, how much money you have, what your background is or what language you speak, the diversity of our city is reflected in our events programme and there truly is something for everyone.”

The event showcases Sheffield’s unique status as a “green city” as one third of the city lies in the Peak District National Park.

Speaking to Sheffield Newsroom about last year’s event, Councillor for Business and Investment Mahzer Iqbal said: “Sheffield has a unique proposition for outdoor recreation, so it stands to reason that the city has a really strong outdoor community to go with that.

“It is the outdoor community that truly makes us The Outdoor City, so we want to celebrate that by sharing all the great events on offer and by inviting more and more people to be part of it. Whether you live in the city or you are a visitor to Sheffield, we invite you to come join us.”

The event includes Sheffield Beer Week, during which breweries will hold open days and pubs will host beer festivals, perfect for a day off from all of the outdoor activities the festival boasts.

The festival runs from the March 1 to 31 and more information can be found at https://www.theoutdoorcity.co.uk/
