Sheffield’s Fitzpatrick vying for £1.2 million prize

Fitzpatrick in action

Sheffield’s Matthew Fitzpatrick is set to tee off at the Genesis Open, in California, today.

Yorkshire’s star golfer will be battling it out for a £1.23 million prize against golfing giants such as Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

Fitzpatrick, who was born and grew up in Sheffield, broke onto the golfing scene in 2015 when he won the British Masters, becoming the youngest winner of a European Tour event.

He is set to begin his tournament in California at 2.55 GMT (6.55 EST), alongside American Sam Ryder and Venezuelan Jhonattan Vegas, who is a three time PGA Tour Winner.

Fitzpatrick will have to put in a strong performance to give himself a chance of claiming the lucrative prize. For some of his opponents, the stakes are even higher.

Golf icon, Tiger Woods, is in the hunt for his 83rd PGA Tour victory, which would give him the coveted title of most wins ever on tour, surpassing current record holder Sam Snead.

Elsewhere, Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy has returned to the top of the world rankings for the first time since 2015, and is the current favourite to claim victory this week.
