Over 300 violence and sexual offence crimes were committed last December in Sheffield according to a new crime statistics report.
1371 crimes were committed within a one mile radius in the last 31 days of 2019. It can be noted that the number of Violence and Sexual Offences crimes exceeds 350, which is 26.3% of the crimes and Anti-social behaviour crimes account to 223 (16.3%).
Street harassment is illegal in some countries like France, Belgium and Portugal but not yet in the UK. According to a study, 90% of women have faced street harassment and some girls are as young as 11 years old. Many sexual offences might not have been reported.
Here is a map with the streets where most of the crimes took place. The most dangerous street for the last month of 2019 is Snig Hill with more than 40 unlawful acts.
Home Secretary Sajid Javid announced in June 2019 that the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner has been provisionally allocated £1.6 million to set up a violence reduction unit.
The minister said: “We are losing too many young lives to the horrors of serious violence and it’s crucial that all parts of our society work together to tackle it head-on.
“The violence reduction unit that is being set up in South Yorkshire with this additional funding will help do this. It will bring together experts from South Yorkshire Police, local authorities, health professionals, community leaders and other key partners to crack down on the root causes of knife crime.”
However, experts from the University of Sheffield say that the short term nature of this investment, as well as poor relationships between state institutions and communities, will limit the plan’s success in Sheffield.
