Legendary Sheffield artist Joe Scarborough to talk at town hall charity event

17 March 2022

Local artist Joe Scarborough will be speaking at Sheffield town hall tonight, in aid of a charity event.

The event, hosted by Lord Mayor Gail Smith, is in collaboration with Sheffield’s Hospital Charity, The Salvation Army and HI5.

Joe’s work centres around the scenery of Sheffield and its people. The event will showcase some of his work and take the guests through a history of his infamous art.

He will also be discussing what made him the artist he is today and his life in the local area.

Joe, who grew up in Pitsmoor is the ambassador for Sheffield’s hospital charity, which is one of three charities the event will be supporting.

He said: “These charities really help out in Sheffield and I’m just happy I can help out for a good cause. It’ll be good fun, we’ve always supported them. If they are doing good for the people of Sheffield, I’m on board.”

His most famous piece is “Sheffield through the ages”. He has always chosen areas of South Yorkshire to depict in his pieces.

Joe said: “I’ve never wandered far from Pitsmoor, I like depicting the coming and going of local people in their everyday lives, the rhythm of it and the necessity of their work is what I try to capture with my actors.”

Joe describes the people he paints as “characters in a theatre production. My work is entertainment, just like show business and my act is my art.”

His inspiration came from his time in the pits when he was younger. After six years of his life working there, he said: “taught him the meaning of colour.”

Recently Joe has been commissioned to do a piece for The Olympic Legacy Park. While working on his piece, Joe will be in a new workshop gifted to him by Ovo Spaces.

When asked will you ever stop painting, he said : “ It is my great desire and to earn it off, it would be lovely to fall off my chair and call it a day. I said I was going to retire when I’m 90, I had a heart attack the next day ahaha, cursing myself for that one.”
