Pollen flower market to return to Sheffield this Sunday

17 March 2022

The flower market popping up in Kelham Island, will host an abundance of green activities from independent businesses based in Sheffield.

This monthly market has been running since September 2021. The event aims to bring local people together after a long hiatus because of the pandemic.

Loz Barker, project manager of Pollen, Said: “With Sheffield being the greenest city in the UK the market aims to bring green businesses together in Sheffield and help people bounce back from the pandemic, we are hoping to create a sense of community with this under the label the Pollen Collective.”

Previously the market has seen a massive turnout, with over 2500 people attending the last Pollen monthly market. Pollen will be appearing at Grey to Green in Castlegate, a restored piece of land dedicated to making the inner city a greener place.

Loz said: “Grey to green is really a hidden gem of the system, its perfect location for us, it really ties in with the Sheffield’s status as the greenest city.”

Workshops are being run on the day, with Kayaking, Flower crown making, terrarium building. Alongside more adult workshops set up by Russell’s bike shed.

The composition of the event consists of “75% producers and 25% artists.” Pollen will be donating earnings from some produce to Sheffield fruit tree community group.

After the pandemic the Economic recovery fund was given to Pollen, this allowed them to start the market. With this new income Pollen are able to subsidise the businesses who take up stalls, meaning that within six months they will get their money back.

When the funding runs out they will be able to continue the market as of its recent success. The market adapts to the different seasons.

The event will be running from 10am to 4pm every third Sunday of the month, with unique activities available every month. Loz said: “We can just hope we can keep doing this, its a lot of work we are usually setting up at 5AM on the day, despite the effort its so worth it.”
