South Yorkshire’s Katherine Brunt and England reach the Cricket World Cup Final

31 March 2022

Barnsley’s Katherine Brunt and the England women’s Cricket team have reached the final of the Women’s World Cup after a magnificent victory over South Africa, this morning.

They will now face Australia in the final after getting South Africa all out for 156 with 12 overs remaining. England set a target of 293 runs, with a brilliant 129 by, the opening batsman, Danni Wyatt.

Talking to BBC Sport, England Captain, Heather Knight said: “The way we’ve turned things around has shown a lot about the character in this group,”

“We’ve taken a few battering over the last couple of months, but the fact we’re here in a World Cup final is great.”

South Africa quickly struggled to get up the run count as Laura Wolvaardt and Lizzelle Lee were taken out very quickly by Anya Shrubsole, who impressively took both wickets.

The ICC World number one, Sophie Ecclestone was the star of England’s defence as she took, a career best, six wickets to 36 runs.

After the match, Knight said: “Danni Wyatt was outstanding. She was really selective with the balls she attacked and didn’t get frustrated when she found the fielders a little bit.

“Sophie Ecclestone has been brilliant for us, that’s her first five-for in international cricket as well. I thought she bowled outstandingly, her and Charlie Dean in tandem on a wicket that had a little bit in it for them. Really pleased.

“We’ll go into the final as underdogs but it’s a fresh slate, we’re all equal on the morning of the game and what a story has been written for us if we can do it.”

This is Brunt’s fifth ODI World cup but now the bowler is aiming to lift the trophy for the third time. Her career has currently spanned over 18 years and

Heather Knight will lead England at the Hagley Oval on Sunday (02:00 BST).
