Sheffield shop owner forced to close business due to cost of living crisis

Sheffield Skincare Company, on Crookes high street, has been forced to close after seven years of trading due to the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Owner, Megan Beardsmore made the announcement on Facebook today stating that her last day of trading will be May 29th. She said that the increase of bills, staff wages, rent costs and council business rates all played a part in the closure.

She told ShefNews: “This has been such a hard decision to make and I have been getting really stressed about it for months now which is influencing me and my family. Times have been very hard for the last few years, trying to survive the pandemic. The high street has got very quiet since January, mostly due to the cost of living crisis we are all going through. People just don’t have the extra money to spend that they used to.”

The Skincare company will continue to trade through their website and pop-up shops, markets and events. Megan also expressed that the main issue was the rateable value on her business which was not the fault of the local council but of the rates and values set from central government.

She added: “I would like to highlight the struggles that all the local independents are going through right now, often quietly behind closed doors. I hope the locals can keep supporting all of the other independents on the Crookes high street as they all desperately need as much support as they can get.”

Comments on the Facebook post expressed sympathy for the business. One customer, said: “So sorry to hear this. It has hit us hard too. Wishing you all the best and hopefully onto a less stressful chapter. We will make sure to pop in before you close.”

Another, said: “So so sorry Megan. You, your staff and your business are incredible, I’ll definitely still be ordering.”

She ended the emotive announcement by thanking her customers for all of their support over the last seven years.
